Katelan Janke (born c. 1986-1987) is the author of the Dear America book Survival in the Storm. She was the winner of the 1998 Dear America Student Contest when she was twelve. Her short story was later expanded into a full book for the series.

Biography[]

Janke is from Dalhart, Texas. At age twelve, she entered the 1998 Arrow Book Club / Dear America Student Writing Contest.[1] Author Barry Denenberg, who judged the contest, called Janke at school to inform her that she won.[2] As prizes, her class received a visit from Kathryn Lasky and a collection of fifty Dear America books.[3] Janke was later given the opportunity to expand her short story into a full book, which would become Survival in the Storm. It took her two years to complete the manuscript. The book was published when she was fifteen.[1][2]
